my 49 half-ton chatters on occasion when I start in first or in reverse. I thought oil soaked clutch etc but before I go that route I read in a manual that oil soaked motor mounts can be the culprit. I checked my front mount and it is oil soaked and also appears very soft, like jelly. In fact some of it is coming thru the mount holes. When I buy a new mount, should I just get the rubber part or do I need the metal lower housing as well? It seems like a rather simple job to replace the mount although the shop manual calls for a close clearance between the rubber and the mounting plate sides. It does not specify it this tolerance is in the installed position or before. Will I have to loosen the rear mounts to do this job? And to raise the motor enough to get to it, can I just run a 2 x 4 across the oil pan with a jack below or is there something safer. Any hints would be appreciated. Thank you.
