I have a 1958 Chevy with a 283 and 3:90 gear ratio rear end. At highway speeds of 65 to 70 m.p.h., the engine is turning fairly high r.p.m.’s. I don’t have a tachometer so I am unable to know the exact r.p.m.’s. I am also running a 2 bbl. carburetor and only get 10 miles to the gallon on the highway. A higher gear, such as a 3:73 or even better 3:55, would help both lowering engine r.p.m.’s and increasing gas mileage.
